Blizzcon 2010

A very brief update today (though I’m hoping the Lich King guide will be done over the weekend… really!) Yesterday saw the announcement regarding Blizzon 2010. Despite early rumours that Blizzard were considering relocating their flagship event to Las Vegas, it’s return to the Anaheim Convention Centre has been confirmed.

Intriguingly (or perhaps not), the convention dates for this year are the 22nd and 23rd of October. This is considerably later than Blizzcon 2009 which took place on the 21st and 22nd of August.

Naturally, the choice of dates has caused widespread speculation about the release date of Cataclysm. (For those who don’t remember, Blizzcon 2008 fell on October the 10th and 11th as Wrath of the Lich King then went live in November). There are fans sitting on both sides of the fence at present, arguing both that Cataclysm may launch prior to Blizzcon allowing the focus to fall on Starcraft II and Diablo III or that like with Wrath, it will slightly precede the launch of Cataclysm.

(Alternatively of course, the date could have no relation to Cataclysms planned release date)

Tickets aren’t yet on sale so anyone wishing to attend this year’s event would be wise to keep a watchful eye on the official Blizzcon website

Any thoughts from my readers as to whether the dates are somehow significant to the launch of Cataclysm? As always, I’d love to hear your opinions! Alternatively, there is a fun debate regarding this taking place over at wow.com amongst the comments to their Blizzcon announcement. The lovely people over there were once again kind enough to give my blog some publicity so a huge thank you to them and welcome to any new readers.

I’ve given up on predicting Cataclysm release as all it will end with is my disappointment 😦

I’d love it sooner rather than later but Blizzards lack of info leaking is a distinct worry along with no apparent Alpha phase *shrug*

I originally thought they would buck the trend and go for a summer release i.e. June – July to combat the usual lul in subscription numbers at that time but to be honest I just cant see it happening now.

I’ll no doubt be one of the people who take a break before it releases because I’ve not been interested in raiding this expansion.

Ah well roll on October – November πŸ˜‰

I agree with you about the lack of alpha. I was fortunate to be in the alpha testing for wrath and while I didn’t expect it this time, you normally at least hear when it starts! I’m of the opinion that blizzcon’s dates don’t really have some deep and hidden meaning about Cataclysm’s release, but you never know..

I’d love a release date though of course πŸ˜‰

I’d like to know just how far in the ‘starting areas’ it let you play for the new races at blizzcon. Im aware that the Worgen zone missed out the first 5 levels due to it being an important part of the story but I wonder if it let you actually play until the Cataclysm hit?

The fact is no info about zones has been released bar the footage in relation to the barrens, desolace etc in the trailer is baffling. Im taking it as read that the reworking of ‘old content’ will be taking up alot of time due to the old models not designed to have people flying over it other than on dedicated flight paths.

I would bite someones hand off for a release date. If only so I could better plan a break or gather materials etc.
